What artists you choose to feature in your home can be almost as pivotal as the home itself. If you are planning on building a new custom home, let CKC take care of the edifice intricacies so you can shop around for some unique décor to accent and compliment the interior. Here are a handful of local galleries to visit for some inspiration, featuring beautiful pieces from globally recognizable artists and some up-and-coming artists closer to home.
ANARTE GALLERY 7959 Broadway St. Suite 404
This contemporary studio features exhibits in all media from both established and emerging artists. Owned and operated by San Antonio socialite Ana Montoya, the gallery is focused on assisting collectors of all levels in the primary and secondary art markets. Detailed background to all works of art is provided upon purchase. Art consulting services are also provided to clients. Recent artist showings include Sandra Mack-Valencia, Lucy Peveto and Roberta Buckles.
ARTPACE 445 North Main Avenue
Not to mention the exclusive rooftop jazz parties hosted in collaboration with local jazz station KRTU, Artpace boasts some incredible art including their renowned international artist-in-residence program. The program invites nine artists a year to live, work and create pivotal art projects in the Alamo City. A guest curator chooses one national, one international and one Texas-based artist during each cycle. Artists have come from as far away as Estonia, Australia, New York City and California.
BLUE STAR CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM 116 Blue Star
Four on-site galleries hold more than 20 contemporary art exhibits annually at Blue Star. The exhibitions feature both emerging and world-renowned artists from across the globe. If you are feeling up to braving the masses, First Friday events always have a spectacular turnout and draw huge crowds from all over the city. Reportedly the galleries traffic over 300,000 visitors each year – Blue Star is one of San Antonio’s the most recognizable contemporary art galleries.
FL!GHT Art Gallery 134 Blue Star
Previously know as the 1906 building, located in the heart of the Lone Star Art District just south of Southtown, FL!GHT is now about 20 paces down the sidewalk from Blue Star’s main gallery space. Founding Director Just Parr and co-conspirator Ed Saavedra have created an artist’s art space with a reputation for presenting art without compromise. The team is constantly generating excitement about art making, viewing and collecting with more of a focus on local contemporary artists like James Cob, Lloyd Walksh, Gerry de los Santos and Vincent Valdez.
SOUTHWEST SCHOOL OF ART 300 Augusta Street
Southwest School of Art is a unique fine arts institute where community members can take art classes and, as of recently, offers a BFA program. The campus is in downtown San Antonio and conveniently houses some of the city’s most gorgeous contemporary galleries including the Russell Hill Rogers Galleries, the Navarro Lobby Gallery, The San Antonio Express-News Photography Gallery and the Ursuline Hall Gallery.
