The Art of the Backsplash

By Kristal Powell, Principal Interior Designer | Haus of Powell

When I meet with clients, one of the things they get most excited about is choosing their countertops and cabinets. Those are definitely important decisions, but there’s one detail that I think can completely transform a kitchen, and that’s the backsplash. I always tell my clients it isn’t just there to protect the wall. It’s one of the biggest opportunities to add personality and character to your kitchen, and in many cases, it’s the first thing your eye is drawn to when you walk into the room. To me, it’s artwork.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating the backsplash as an afterthought. By the time some homeowners start looking at tile, they’ve already made every other selection and are just trying to “find something that matches.” Instead, I encourage my clients to think about the backsplash as part of the overall design from the very beginning.

A beautiful backsplash doesn’t have to be bold to make an impact. Sometimes it’s the texture of a handmade tile, the movement in a natural stone, or even the way the material catches the light throughout the day that makes all the difference.

I’m also a big believer in taking the backsplash all the way to the ceiling whenever it makes sense. Whether it’s behind a range or creating a feature wall, extending the material adds height, creates a more custom look, and gives the kitchen a finished, architectural feel. It’s one of those details that makes people walk in and immediately say, “Wow.”

Another thing I always remind clients: don’t choose a backsplash just because it’s trending. Trends come and go, but your home should reflect your style and the way you live. My goal is to help you make selections you’ll still love years from now.

At Haus of Powell and CKC Custom Homes, we look at every finish as part of the bigger picture. Your cabinetry, countertops, lighting, flooring, and backsplash all work together to create a home that feels timeless and uniquely yours. When all of those pieces come together, that’s when the magic happens.

If you’re planning a custom home or a kitchen remodel, don’t overlook the backsplash, sometimes it’s the smallest details that have the biggest impact. And I always say luxury isn’t about adding more; it’s about being intentional with every decision. That’s exactly what great design is all about.
